Craft in Rwanda is not a leftover of the past. Cooperatives and independent makers keep techniques alive while designing for today's homes, hotels, and travellers. The difference is attribution: on IBARA you always know who made the work.
Start with travel-friendly pieces if you are still on the road — smaller Imigongo panels, compact baskets, photography. Commission or ship larger work when you want a statement for a house in Kigali, Nairobi, Kampala, or further afield.
If you are gifting, ask for the maker’s story. A named tradition — Imigongo, Agaseke, a woven lid, a carved form — travels further than a generic “African craft” label.
Prefer named makers and clear materials over unlabelled market copies.
Match size to how you will carry or ship the piece.
Ask about hotel delivery in Kigali when packing space is tight.
Read the cultural story on the listing — it is part of the gift.
Rwanda is known for Imigongo geometric art, Agaseke peace baskets and other weaving, wood and stone sculpture, photography, and contemporary studio painting. IBARA gathers verified makers of these crafts in one marketplace.
Ubukorikori is the Kinyarwanda word for handicrafts and making by hand. On IBARA it covers baskets, Imigongo, fibre work, and related objects from named Rwandan creators.
